Mount Pleasant Martial Arts and Traditional Taekwondo
Mount Pleasant Martial Arts was founded around 40 years ago in the basement of a church. The founder, Master Ken McQueen eventually acquired enough students that it was necessary to rent a commercial space. Master McQueen achieved his sixth degree black belt before he retired. Third degree black belt Mr. Brandon McQueen has been training since 2012 and instructing since 2017.
In the modern era, traditional martial arts are used not only to learn how to defend oneself, but also to work on self-improvement of the body, mind and life skills. Learning how to be disciplined, respectful, having control of one’s body, and coping with adversity are life skills needed now more than ever, particularly in the age of screens. The American Taekwondo Association also has a great competition circuit and great people anywhere you go in the U.S.
In our traditional martial arts programs, we have 9 color belts and 9 black belts. We do each of our color belts in 2 parts, one part per cycle. Every cycle is 2 months long. Each testing cycle has a designated life skill. For January and February, the life skill is DISCIPLINE. Students in the traditional class are welcome to attend 2 classes per week.
At the end of 2 months, we test to go to the next rank. For the average person, it takes a minimum of 40 months to be able to test for a black belt. Testing is $50 for color belts and $175 for black belts. Must have 16 classes to test.
For the students who find themselves excelling in our traditional program, we have advanced programs available. The Leadership program, with a heavy focus on weapons, sparring and X-treme martial arts, is available to students by invitation. Leadership students are welcome to attend as many classes per week as they like. We also have a Legacy program for students who want to learn how to be an instructor.
Non-Traditional Martial Arts
Where our traditional taekwondo program is family-friendly, our non-traditional martial arts class is an adult program. The main focus of this class is self-defense and will rely significantly on the Warrior Krav Maga system. We will also have some fun boxing, sparring, and doing ground work. For this class, you will need a mouth guard, boxing gloves, and shin guards.
